Clearing the smoke: where you can buy legal pot in Regina

With just two weeks until recreational marijuana is legalized, most of the six approved pot shops in Regina remain empty storefronts or under renovation.

The only location showing signage is Wiid Boutique on Albert Street in the south end of the city. It appears to be the closest to opening but still needs to build a safe and may open a week or so after legalization.

The locations of the cannabis retail stores are:

• 4554 Albert Street (Wiid Boutique)
• 1505 Albert Street
• 681 Albert Street
• 1306 Broad Street
• 1846 Scarth Street
• 2810 E. Quance Street

These locations include the former Rogers store at Albert Street and Dewdney Street, an empty Coney Island Poutine on Albert Street, the former Re-Play Games on Broad Street, an empty storefront under Evolution Fitness on Scarth Street and the plaza that has an abandoned Burger Baron on Quance Street East.

As the legalization date fast approaches, customers may turn to online sales to buy marijuana on Oct. 17.

According to SLGA, Saskatchewan retailers are only allowed to take orders from customers within the province.

“They can’t sell outside the province, just like other retailers in other provinces can’t sell into Saskatchewan,” SLGA spokesperson David Morris said.

Cannabis can be delivered by the retailer or by a contracted common carrier that has a special use permit from SLGA.

Similar to buying marijuana in a retail store, online orders are limited to 30 grams. All purchases must be pre-paid and customers must show ID for proof of age upon delivery.

Wiid Boutique intends to offer delivery about one month after it opens in Regina but was still looking to clarify the rules. Federal regulations allow adults to possess up to 30 grams of marijuana at a time.

“Can the driver have more than the legal amount of 30 grams or can they have multiple orders,” said Wiid Boutique owner Landyn Uhersky.

SLGA confirmed that approved carriers may exceed the individual limit for the purposes of making a delivery and that comes when retailers were awarded the permit for the store.

Eden, located on Highway 46 between Regina and Pilot Butte, is one of the retailers that plans to sell in store and online on Oct. 17. It’s not clear how many of the 51 locations across Saskatchewan will accept online orders on legalization day.
