Light snow blankets southern Sask., causing poor road conditions

People in southern Saskatchewan woke up to another day of early winter weather Wednesday with snowfall expected to continue throughout the morning.

Early Wednesday morning the snow was melting as it hit the pavement but by morning rush hour road conditions started getting worse with slushy, wet snow sticking to city streets. The Regina airport reported many delayed flights for arrivals and departures.

The Highway Hotline reported slushy, wet and freezing winter driving conditions across most of the southern part of the province.

The heavy, wet snow was sticking to grass, trees and cars and Environment Canada predicted accumulations of about two centimetres, or less than an inch.

Golfers in the city could still hold out hope for a few days on the greens, as the city announced the Tor Hill, Joanne Goulet and Murray golf courses will remain open until temperatures are consistently below zero.

Environment Canada’s chief meteorologist David Phillips admitted the winter-like weather will likely stick around for the next two weeks. The end of the month could bring some relief to those who already hate the cold temperatures.

People in Saskatchewan could look to Alberta to see the early snowfall was very light in comparison. Calgary was hit with more than a foot of snow on Tuesday and plows had to be brought in from other cities to clear the streets. Police in Calgary responded to 250 collisions and some flights were cancelled or delayed.

Photos of the snow started popping up on social media from different areas. The Regina Airport and the Regina Bypass both tweeted out advisories about the impact of the snow.
