Tom Wilson’s stupidity will cost him his entire annual salary.
According to TSN’s Frank Seravalli, Wilson will be writing a cheque worth $1.2 million to the NHL’s Player Emergency Assistance Fund as part of the punishment for his 20-game suspension. Wilson was suspended for a vicious, blind-side hit to the head of an opponent during a preseason game.
Wilson’s new contract with the Washington Capitals pays him $6.1 million this season, but he already received $5 million as a bonus. So he’s basically playing this season for free. Maybe that will help the message sink into Wilson’s brain. He’s now been suspended four times in his last 105 games, all for dirty hits. The NHL called it an “unprecedented frequency of suspensions in the history of the Department of Player Safety.”
The NHL is being applauded for sending a stern message – it wants Wilson to change how he plays. His brain hasn’t figured that out. Maybe his wallet will understand.
