It should be easier to find a hotel room in Regina if the Roughriders successfully win a bid to host the 2020 Grey Cup.
When the Riders last hosted the CFL championship game in 2013, it was tough to find a hotel room in the city. Most were booked up, starting two years in advance and some fans found other accommodations, camping out in trailers and basements.
Since then, Regina has added nine new hotels with another 950 rooms. That is a 30 per cent increase from 2013.
“I think we’re in probably the strongest position we’ve ever been to host a Grey Cup,” said Tracy Fahlman, President and CEO of the Regina Hotels Association.
The hotels association partners with the Roughriders to help bring the Grey Cup to town. This was also done for other national sporting events in the city, including working with CURLSASK to bring in the Tim Hortons Brier and with the Wascana Country Club to host the CP Women’s Open.
Fahlman could not disclose what the requirements are but explained the club shares them with the hotels association and they would gather what’s needed. She’s confident they’ve secured all their hotel room requirements for the bid.
“We’re really excited. We wish them all the best and we have their back,” Fahlman said.
Fahlman said although Regina has not won the bid for 2020 yet, it wouldn’t surprise her if the phones started ringing with people looking into another trip to the Queen City.
“Saskatchewan is such an amazing host of the Grey Cup.”
