Two Saskatchewan inmates are facing charges after police say they escaped custody via a stolen vehicle Thursday afternoon.
Around 2 p.m., RCMP said a vehicle was reported stolen in Yorkton. The suspects were believed to be two White Spruce Correctional Centre inmates who were outside the facility on a work crew.
A short time later, a Mountie in an unmarked car noticed the stolen vehicle driving dangerously and speeding on Highway 10 east of Balcarres.
Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP eventually located the vehicle and began pursuing it. To help in the chase, the White Butte detachment closed down eastbound traffic on Highway 10 and set up a spike belt.
The stolen vehicle slowed down and pulled over before the spike belt, which is when the two inmates were taken into custody.
A 20-year-old man from Regina is facing eight charges — including dangerous driving, escaping custody and driving while disqualified.
A 25-year-old man from Wainwright, Alta. is charged with possession of stolen property and escaping custody.
Both will appear in Regina provincial court next Tuesday.
