Craik man charged with 30 counts of fraud

Cheques found floating in a ditch two years ago may have been the catalyst for a man being charged with 30 counts of fraud.

The charges were laid against a former administrator for the town of Craik which is 119 kilometres north of Regina on Highway 11.

According to an RCMP news release, the fraud happened when the person was the administrator, between 2010 and 2014. The town notified the police of the suspected fraud in 2014. Police officers began a lengthy investigation which included a forensic audit.

In May 2014, The Davidson Leader newspaper published a report that described a town council meeting where a woman complained her grandson had found cheques floating in a ditch that were made out to the town from residents. In the article, the mayor said Jeff Murray, who was the administrator at the time, had been put on leave and it was related to the cheques.

RCMP haven’t officially released the name of the accused, but he will be in court in Moose Jaw in June.
