Regina murder victim Andre Aubertin remembered as friendly, open man

Andre Aubertin, a loving Montreal Canadiens fan, is being remembered by family and friends after he was killed Tuesday.

Aubertin, 56, was also known as Frenchy. His neighbour Rhonda was eager to talk about the man she’d said she’d lived on the same block with for 17 years, but was emotional the day after his death.

“Frenchy knew everybody on the block. We all get along. We all look out for each other. We’re very supportive.”

Rhonda, who chose not to share her last name, described Aubertin as an awesome person.

“He was very friendly, his house was open, the door was always open. He was always good to people, he never had a bad thing to say about anybody.”

She said along with being a big Canadiens fan, Aubertin was a Saskatchewan Roughriders fan. She said he would have barbecues on game days, and invite family and friends.

On Tuesday, police were called to Aubertin’s house on the 1000 block of Princess Street about an injured man. Aubertin died in hospital.

Rhonda said at first, when she saw the commotion, she thought Aubertin might have just gotten sick.

“I just thought maybe he had a heart attack, until the street started showing more other things, like the fire truck and the ambulance.”

She said she doesn’t know why he was killed.

“I think Frenchy opened the door to the wrong people, and that’s what happened. I tried to tell him, he was too overly friendly.”

Rhonda said people on the block are emotional about what happened.

A 27-year-old man from Fort Qu’Appelle is facing a charge of second-degree murder in Aubertin’s death.

Police also took a man and a woman into custody Wednesday following an eight-and-a-half-hour standoff. Police say the man was wanted in connection to Aubertin’s death.
