Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive end Charleston Hughes, to the best of our knowledge, hasn’t been in trouble with the law before.
So when CJME and CKOM broke the story that Hughes had been charged with impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample, immediately the discussion started about whether he should be disciplined by his CFL team. We’re not saying he’s guilty. And people deserve second chances. This is a community-owned team that allowed former receiver Duron Carter to go unpunished despite twice getting charged with marijuana possession inside an airport.
However, the Roughriders immediately dispatched tailback Jerome Messam when he was charged with voyeurism and defensive back Justin Cox, who has a warrant out for his arrest, was dumped after a repeated series of domestic assaults.
Saskatchewan is trying to reduce its nation-leading incidence of impaired driving and the Roughriders visibly support the province’s “Safe Ride” program. The Roughriders need to show they are sincere members of the community and discipline their player with a short suspension.
