Saskatoon police warn of phone scam targeting elderly women

Reports of a phone scam targeting elderly women prompted Saskatoon police to issue a public warning Monday.

Officials believe two recent incidents are related.

The first involved a 91-year-old woman who received a call from a man claiming to be a bank security officer.

According to police, the suspect said he wanted help catching criminals and asked the woman to withdraw money from her account and meet him at an undisclosed location.

The caller then told her the money would be covered by insurance.

A second incident involved a 90-year-old woman.

The senior received a call from an unknown man claiming to be a bank representative. He said the woman owed money after there was an issue with her savings account.

The victim was told to withdraw the amount and meet up with the man.  

Police describe the suspect as a white man in his 60s, around six feet (183 cm) tall with a slim build.

The Saskatoon Police Service economic crime unit is investigating both incidents.
