Hopefully, the 2026 Winter Olympics will have no place that wants them.
Calgary’s bid is wavering because of a $5 billion price tag. Who wants to pay that much for the Games? It’s scaring the city, provincial and federal governments, who hopefully realize that it’s stupid to pay billions of dollars to finance the sleazy International Olympic Committee. No hosting community can gain enough of a legacy to make it worthwhile.
Calgary was one of seven bids initially submitted for hosting the 2026 Games. A bid from Sweden and another from Italy appear to still be interested, but neither has acquired the necessary government financing.
The Olympics have become too big, too corrupt and too expensive. Not having anyone ready to pay the IOC’s exorbitant hosting prices shows that it’s time to downgrade the Games, to return them to their essence of honouring athletic achievements instead of rewarding corporate greed.
