Windy start to the weekend expected in Saskatoon

Wicked winds whipped across the province Wednesday – and speeds are likely to pick up again heading into the weekend.

Winds speeds reached 85 km/hr in Saskatoon Wednesday.

While Swift Current took top honours in the province, with recorded gusts of 91 km/hr.

Environment Canada meteorologist Justin Share told CKOM News conditions were the result of a strong low pressure system.

“It skirted across the province pretty fast and with it, brought really strong winds in behind it,” said Share.

“But now we’ve got an arctic ridge building in today and that should be pretty benign weather-wise.”

Conditions are expected to remain steady, and quieter, in Saskatoon until Friday.

That’s when another system, coming in from Alberta, is expected to increase gusts in the area heading into Saturday.

While strong winds can be dangerous, Share said the lack of foliage in spring helps lessen potential damage.

“Those winds in the summer usually will rip trees down a lot because they’ll have more drag with the leaves,” he said.

“Still, if people have loose objects lying around, winds will pick it up pretty good and throw it around.”
