Regina’s Catholic School Division is not renewing its contract with the bus company that drives your kids to school, News Talk Radio has learned.
The division confirmed the news Thursday, saying the contract with First Student Canada is up at the end of the current school year. The company will continue to provide service until that time.
“While unfortunate, we’re going to continue to deliver strong and safe service to the students for the Regina operations until the very end,” said Jay Brock with First Student. “It’s a business decision and at this particular time, again, sad about it; we’re going to help make it a smooth transition the best that we can.”
He wouldn’t comment on why the decision was made. However, the school division said it decided to go with a more cost-effective solution, resulting in significant savings.
Right now, there are 88 drivers completing 117 school runs. In September 2016, 83 drivers will be able to make 123 runs.
“We do have some drivers unfortunately that are going to be impacted by this. We’re hoping that we can partner with the new provider and hopefully they will be able to take some of those drivers on,” Brock explained, though he couldn’t offer an exact number of affected drivers.
He did say that First Student still has a strong presence in the Queen City, offering services to Luther and Laval High Schools, while also continuing their industrial contracts and working to expand charter operations.
The division isn’t revealing who the new service provider is at this time or the length of the new agreement. More information will be released once all the details have been finalized, according to a spokesperson.
