Police send warning with winter thefts on the rise in Regina

Regina police are warning us to be wary this winter season after a high number of thefts.

They say there were 313 reported thefts from vehicles between Oct. 2-30.

The advice comes from officers after two 15-year-olds were charged with several break and enters across the city.

On Oct. 30 at around 12:45 a.m., police were called to a business in the 800 block of Albert Street after an alarm was sounded.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw two teens walking away from the business, carrying electronic equipment and a backpack. The two teenage boys were stopped and questioned and then arrested.

More stolen property was found after further searches of the backpack.

Police then discovered the two teens were linked to a number of other break and enters across the city. This led to the two youths being jointly charged.

Another emerging trend in October was theft of license plates, with 84 license plates reported stolen.

Thefts from mailboxes in apartment and condo buildings are also a trend of note.

In the past two weeks, multiple apartments and condos in the Normanview area as well as the area east of Park Street have reported incidents of thefts from mailboxes .

To reduce the risk of theft, Regina police advise you to remove mail regularly from your mailbox, and account for your mailbox key at all times. Keep an eye out for suspicious activity in lobbies and entrance ways in your apartment or condo building.

Officers are reminding everyone to lock vehicle doors, remove keys and garage door openers as well as items of value. Check the license plate after your vehicle has been parked outside and report thefts of license plates to police.

Suspected break and enter artist arrested

In an unrelated incident, police noticed a 22-year-old man riding a bicycle and carrying a crowbar in Harbour Landing.

Officers confirmed that the male was Zachary Walter Robert Hahn of Regina, who was in breach of his probation.

Police arrested Hahn and upon further searches of Hahn, discovered multiple break-in tools.

Officers also found evidence connecting him to a series of break and enters, mainly to condominium residences from Sept. 28 to Oct. 30, 2018.

Hahn now faces multiple charges, including 10 counts of break and enter with intent and 16 counts of failing to comply with probation order.
