Despite his own recent success, Regina-Lewvan NDP member of Parliament Erin Weir is not saying how he will vote on the continued leadership of Thomas Mulcair.
Weir’s win in the Oct. 18 federal election marked the first time Regina voters had elected an NDP MP since 2000.
He says the Mulcair national campaign worked in Regina-Lewvan as well as in the riding of Saskatoon West.
“We were delighted for the first time in a decade the campaign went very well for us locally.” he said.
However, he admits, “there was certainly some disappointment with the nationwide results”.
The NDP dropped to third party status from official opposition last October
Mulcair’s leadership is up for a vote at the national NDP convention in Edmonton this weekend.
Weir is not saying how he will vote, or what he expects to happen Sunday.
News Talk Radio specifically asked him, can you go into another election in three and a half years with Thomas Mulcair as your leader?
“We’re about to find out part of the answer to that on Sunday,” Weir replied.
It is anticipated that Mulcair will need at least 70 per cent support among delegates in Edmonton to remain as leader.
On the issue of oil pipelines, Weir says while he endorses a move towards a green economy, he fully supports the need for expanded pipelines to get Western Canadian oil to market.
Despite the devastating results nationally in the federal election, and the questions surrounding Mulcair’s continuing leadership, Weir says the mood of the Edmonton NDP convention is very positive.
