Drivers can ready for another traffic inconvenience at the Pinkie Road interchange just two years after it was built.
The interchange needs to be upgraded to connect with what will eventually be the south bypass.
Doug Wakabayashi with the Ministry of Highways insists this is what was meant to happen all along.
“When we did design it and build it, we did knowing at some point in time we were going to upgrade that to a system interchange,” he explained. “So it was designed and built in a manner that it can be expanded.”
A service interchange is what you currently find on the provincial highway system which typically includes some sort of traffic control, like a stop sign.
A system interchange, much like you see in the U.S., allows traffic in all directions to keep moving.
It isn’t clear when the work will begin but it will be complete by the 2019 road construction season.
There will be some inconvenience to drivers as the work begins.
The government can’t say how much this change will cost nor can it itemize the massive bypass project because P3’s are typically what’s called “all-in bids”.
