5 Roughriders named West Division all-stars

Five Saskatchewan Roughriders have been named West Division all-stars after strong 2018 campaigns.

The CFL named Brendon LaBatte, Brett Lauther, Charleston Hughes, Ed Gainey and Willie Jefferson as some of the West Division’s best.

Eleven year CFL vet LaBatte played in 18 games this season, spending time at both left guard and centre. This is the ninth time LaBatte has been named a division all-star during his career.

Hughes led the league in sacks for the third year in a row, picking up 15 of them during the season. Hughes added on 35 tackles, three forced fumbles and one fumble return for a 57-yard touchdown. This is the seventh time he has been named a West Division all-star.

For the second year in a row Jefferson was named a CFL division all-star with a career year in sacks.

Notching 10 sacks for the first time in his career.

He also added two interceptions which he returned for touchdowns.

Jefferson is also named the 2018 Riders’ Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

Gainey’s 2018 season saw him collect 51 tackles, one quarterback sack, one forced fumble, three interceptions and a touchdown. He was also named an all-star during 2017.

Lauther connected on 90 per cent of his field goals for the green and white, including one for 56-yards.

His conversion rate is the second-best in Riders history.

This is the first time Lauther has been named a CFL division all-star.

He was also named the 2018 Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and Most Outstanding Canadian.
