There’s whale watching – and then there’s getting too close for comfort.
A Vancouver kayaker and his partner captured a close encounter with a humpback whale on video over the weekend.
The short clip was posted by the kayaker, who goes by Johnny Vanuck on Instagram, and shows the whale surfacing a paddle-length away, then going back down right below his kayak.
“We set out to see if we could find the whale that has been feeding in the area for the last few days,” Johnny wrote in his post.
“My heart started racing when I saw small fish swimming to the surface in frenzy.”
The encounter happened between Jericho and Kitsilano Beaches.
