A Regina pest control company is seeing a spike in bed bug infestations around the city this fall.
Shawn Sherwood with Poulin’s Pest Control said there always appears to be an increase in bed bug cases in the winter because in the summer people think they’re being bitten by mosquitoes.
“Well, they’re not always mosquito bites, sometimes they end up being bed bug bites, but you don’t go looking for them, so yeah, this is a normal uptick that we see,” Sherwood explained.
Sherwood has some particular advice for people staying at hotels. When he gets to any hotel room as a guest, the first thing he does is to place his suitcase in the bathtub, then he checks the bed.
“Taking the covers off of it, taking the box spring and mattress and standing them up. I’m looking for active bed bugs,” he explained.
Bed bugs are the same size, shape and colour as wood ticks. Sherwood said people should also check the headboard and look for black pencil marks along the seams and edges of the box spring and mattress.
For anyone who does wind up staying at a hotel with a bed bug issue, he has instructions on how to stop them from spreading to their home.
“You take everything out of your suitcase that can go in the dryer and the clothes that you’re wearing and you put them into the dryer,” he said. “Twenty minutes at high heat will kill all the bed bugs in there and all the bed bug eggs.”
For any item that can’t go into the dryer, Sherwood recommends putting those into a tied-up plastic garbage bag with an insecticide strip and letting it sit for two weeks which should kill off the bed bugs.
