As always… the head coach is usually the first to go.
It’s the easiest thing in pro sports when things don’t go well, fire the head coach because it’s tougher to find a manager to manage mid-season and you can’t trade all the players that clearly are the bigger problem than the coach.
The saying becomes – like Marc Savard, the veteran Bruin tweeted Sunday about Edmonton – the players have stopped listening to their coach.
I say that’s more on the millionaire players than it is on the coach. Especially when they haven’t won squat in the last couple of years. A brief second-round playoff round is perceived as though the Oilers went to the Cup Final.
Maybe that’s because any playoff victory has to be celebrated in Edmonton, as they are few and far between.
Todd McLellan isn’t the problem. He’s a good coach, with an overrated manager and an overrated roster.
But it is likely McLellan will be the fall guy, which will be good news for another NHL team looking for a solid head coach.
