The Roughriders were among the first and strongest proponents of the edict, which limits each team to 11 coaches and 14 more employees in football operations. Their total salaries and benefits can’t exceed about $2.6 million.
And in a nod to safety, there are no limits on the size of the training and medical staff.
After being told during his Grey Cup press conference that there was much public confusion about the cap, Commissioner Randy Ambrosie made sure the specifics have been revealed. The teams are reacting accordingly, trimming staff and salaries, particularly the teams that were over-staffed.
Like the Roughriders.
The Roughriders couldn’t control the growth of their ever-expanding support staff. They needed rules. And these rules won’t just help the Roughriders, they will help every one of the CFL’s nine franchises control their spending, with the added benefit of creating a level playing field.
