Wet snow expected to blanket Cypress Hills, Maple Creek

The far southwest corner of Saskatchewan was put under a snowfall warning Monday as significant, wet snow was expected in the area.

Cypress Hills, Maple Creek and Shaunavon were included in the morning warning. Environment Canada warned that six to 12 centimetres of snow had already fallen overnight from Sunday to Monday, and another five to 10 cm was possible through the day.

Environment Canada’s warning included a note on highways, highlighting that travel was expected to be hazardous due to snow-packed roads and icy sections.

“Roads were slushy,” said Ron Plummer, who drove to work in Maple Creek Monday morning. “They weren’t bad because it was still warm enough that it’s not freezing.”

Plummer suspected the Cypress Hills park area likely got more snow due to the elevation.
