3 east Regina schools secured due to report of gun

The outside doors of three schools in east Regina were locked briefly at the end of the day Monday while police investigated a report of a person in the area with a gun.

A staff member at one of the elementary schools witnessed a teen boy smash a car window and run off with what they believed could be a hand gun. Police quickly found and arrested the suspect who did not have a gun or any other weapon.

F.W. Johnson Collegiate as well as Judge Bryant Elementary School and another nearby elementary school were put into secure-the-building mode between 3 p.m. and dismissal time at 3:35 p.m. Secure the building means that normal school activities carry on, but the outside doors are locked and monitored by staff members.

Charges are pending against the youth for mischief and damage to the vehicle.

Police say this incident was completely unrelated to the bomb threat at Winston Knoll Collegiate earlier in the day. In that case the school was evacuated and officers searched the grounds but did not find anything suspicious.
