With highs hovering around the 28 C mark, the forecast for the first week of May almost looks like beach weather.
“We’re seeing temperatures that could very well be in the record category, I mean 28 C, 29 degrees, even the dog days of summer it would be questionable whether we’d reach that high,” commented Dave Phillips, chief meteorologist with Environment Canada.
While golfers will likely be celebrating a week-long heat wave, Phillips commented that the hot, dry conditions may cause more of a concern for grass fires, wildfires and even people with asthma or allergies.
He noted that for the past 12 months, Saskatchewan people have enjoyed either normal or warmer-than-normal temperatures. While a pessimist may worry that we’ve used up our time for good weather too early, Phillips said all the weather models across the globe show these conditions are likely to stick around.
“Hey get used to it. We think that May looks warmer than normal,” Phillips said. “I looked this morning right hot out of the computer, May, June, July and August all showing the same thing I mean it’s delightfully boring.”
The sunshine and heat was a welcome change for runners in the Regina Police Service Half Marathon on Sunday morning.
“It was the best day weather-wise since I’ve been running the RPS. Usually it’s rainy or super windy or really, really cold, so it was very unusual to be running in such beautiful weather,” commented Ian Daniels.
He added that the past few months have been great weather for training outside as well.
“It was a beautiful day to run, the sun was shining, it was warm,” commented Danelle Reiss who ran in the relay.
Michelle Korinetz agreed that you couldn’t ask for better weather for a spring run.
“It was beautiful. It was hot. I was the third leg, so it was by far the hottest part so I’m sweaty but it was fun,” she said. “I heard last year or a couple years ago it was snowing, so this was great.”
