Outdoor rinks are starting to open up across Regina, just in time for the Christmas holidays.
The city maintains 55 rinks, with a list found here, but not all of them are open as of Saturday.
Charmaine Neufeld, Manager of Parks Maintenance, explained the warmer than average temperatures this December have made flooding the rinks more difficult.
“You can’t put as much water on so it just takes longer to build up the ice surfaces,” said Neufeld.
Crews have started flooding rinks across the city earlier in the morning to take advantage of the colder temperatures before it warms up in the afternoon.
“People want to get skating before Christmas and of course the weather is nice,” said Neufeld.
She said it’s not the city’s preference but understands some people might go skating on rinks that aren’t quite ready yet.
The reason most outdoor rinks that aren’t yet listed as open is because they have rough edges. The city encourages skaters to be cautious and use portions of the rink that are done.
The city expects to open more outdoor rinks as colder temperatures arrive next week.
