No one was seriously hurt as a fire destroyed a building north of Yorkton early Friday morning.
Kevin Young was woken by the sound of his dogs barking shortly after 2 a.m.
“Power at my house went out, my dogs went kind of wild and vicious … and we got out of bed to see the flames shooting about 100, 150 feet above our structures.”
Young soon discovered it wasn’t his structures at Young’s Plant World on fire, it was the Parkland Greenhouse next door.
Riding on his quad, Young went to make sure the people in two nearby homes were OK, then phoned 911 to report that two people may still be inside the Parkland Greenhouse.
The City of Yorkton confirms that people who were inside the greenhouse were able to get out with only minor injuries.
Young said the wind blew the flames away from his buildings.
“If it hadn’t been for a … wind out of the northwest, our buildings would have went also.”
Young said a twisted, metal frame is all that remained as smoke continued to drift from embers Friday morning. The city said the structure was 80 per cent destroyed.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
