A snow plow driver is reminding other drivers to be safe when passing them on the highways this winter.
Devin Bell is the supervisor of operations in the Southey area and has driven snow plows for 18 years. Since 2015, drivers have been better able to spot snow plows with flashing blue lights added to the amber lights on the trucks.
“I think people actually recognize us a lot better and I think they do give us a little bit more room because they know it’s us out there,” said Bell.
When drivers approach a snow plow, they’re encouraged to be patient and only pass when it’s safe to do so. Bell said most drivers respect them and give them room, but added there are others who seem to be in a hurry to get by, putting themselves and others in danger.
While drivers are allowed to pass a snow plow, they shouldn’t do so if visibility is reduced by the snow cloud formed by the plow’s blade. Bell said they aren’t trying to get in your way. Snow plow drivers will pull over every 10 to 15 kilometres to let drivers pass.
“If they can give us a little bit of room and be patient with us, we will let them get past us,” said Bell.
A new law is also in effect to improve safety on the highways. When snow plows, tow trucks or emergency vehicles are stopped, drivers must slow to 60 km/h when passing.
