Cybelle Oscvirk admits celebrating a wedding anniversary at a fast food restaurant isn’t the most romantic setting, but for her parents it’s become a tradition since they wed 50 years ago.
“It was actually at that particular A&W that they met,” Oscvirk said.
In 1964, Oscvirk’s dad pulled up to the old car-hop style restaurant on 8th Street in Saskatoon and parked beside her mom. They were introduced by friends and hit it off, their daughter said.
“She needed a ride home to her hometown and he was going out in that direction. That’s how it all started.”
Every year on May 7, Wayne and Marie Oscvirk go back to the A&W on 8th Street to have lunch and reminisce of how they first met.
On Saturday, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and the restaurant helped the family throw the couple a 60s-themed party, complete with music, classic cars and milkshakes.
“We had a deejay playing 60s music and then they re-enacted a car hop…it was really nice,” Oscvirk said, adding family came from as far away as Ontario.
While the restaurant’s nostalgic car hop is long gone, Oscvirk said the location still holds fond memories for her parents, adding they’ll be back at their anniversary spot next year to celebrate 51 years together.
