Yeah, Ovi! Alexander Ovechkin is becoming even more worthy of his nickname, the Great Eight.
He’s standing up to the National Hockey League and the mid-season silliness of its All-Star Game. Ovechkin is 33-years-old, coming off his first Stanley Cup victory with the Washington Capitals, still scoring goals and he hasn’t missed a game this season. Ovechkin has always happily represented his homeland, Russia, whenever summoned for an international event. Indeed, he was ready to skip NHL games last season to play in the Winter Olympics, until the league deemed that illegal and threatened to punish his team for allowing him to leave in the middle of the season.
Yet that’s exactly what the NHL does. It shuts down for a week so its hard-working stars can appear in a skills competition, make P.R. appearances and play a foolish, fabricated three-on-three tournament.
Ovechkin has announced he’s not injured, he simply wants to get some rest so he can best perform for his employer. Ovechkin will be suspended by the NHL one game for his non-appearance. Perhaps Ovechkin is snubbing the NHL in retribution for its Olympic decision, which would make this even better.
