Families skating and playing shinny on Regina’s outdoor rinks found themselves a little overdressed under the warm sun on Thursday.
“It feels like summer with snow,” said Addison Kaufmann.
She said it was her idea to bring the family to the rink in Harbour Landing during this January warm-up after wind chills around -40 C before the new year.
“I definitely dressed too warm. I thought it was going to be colder than it is,” said Addison’s mom Suzanne Kaufmann as the temperature reached 1 C.
Addison said her mom used to be a figure skater and she was at the rink learning how to skate.
Most skaters wore a light jacket without a toque, squinting their eyes as the bright sun reflected off the ice surface.
Cameron Kuckartz was playing hockey and ringette with some friends. He said they were out earlier in the extreme cold, but he was basking in the sun wearing only a sweater on Thursday.
“Because it’s really hot out, you know? Sweating,” said Kuckartz.
The one downside to the warmer weather was the condition of the ice. Some skaters said it had too many cracks in it, plus there’s a chance of more melting on Friday with temperatures expected to reach 5 C.
