Darrell Davis: Where’s the CFL going?

Following CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie would be lots of fun these days, but that could soon change.

Halifax. Edmonton for Grey Cup. Back to Halifax for discussions with owners of the prospective CFL franchise. Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, for a gathering of general managers, coaches and team executives. Mexico City for the combine, where Mexican players will, for the first time, be assessed as potential CFL draft choices.

It all sounds so exciting. But another offseason destination has been taken off Ambrosie’s itinerary. CFL Week had been tentatively planned for Ottawa in March, following previous annual events in Regina and Winnipeg. It was a tremendous event with extensive media coverage, building interest for the upcoming season.

Uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season caused the cancellation of CFL Week. The CFL has stopped paying off-season bonuses to its players to accentuate the pending expiration of the collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players’ association.

Everywhere Ambrosie goes he gets asked about negotiations with the CFLPA. Ambrosie says they’re working on it. Not as much fun.
