More adult players are now investing in the protective equipment.
Donations have been rolling in from across the country for Fort McMurray evacuees and the Red Cross has started getting that money into the hands of people who need it.
The organization pledged this week to distribute $50 million and, so far, has been able to e-transfer $30 million directly into evacuees’ bank accounts.
Cindy Fuchs, vice-president of Canadian Red Cross of Saskatchewan, said they have protocols in place to protect donor dollars and to ensure people aren’t taking advantage of the generosity.
“Ninety-nine per cent of people are legit, and the one per cent – they’ll have to live with themselves,” she said.
The Red Cross has received reports of people going door-to-door in some communities saying they’re collecting donations for the organization.
“If someone is coming to your door and you’re not sure and they’ve asked for cash, you can always call our office and we’ll double check because most people have had to register with us to say that they are collecting,” Fuchs said.
Last Thursday, six Rawlco radio stations in the province hosted The Saskatchewan Day of Caring for Fort McMurray and raised $641,110.
According to Fuchs, the total donated by Saskatchewan people has now surpassed $1.5 million.
