Regina jeweller using copper from the Sask. legislative building dome

A Regina jeweller is putting together pieces of Saskatchewan’s history and future to make art out of the legislature.

Megan Hazel, with Megan J Hazel Jewellery, is creating pieces from the rivets and old and new copper on the dome at the legislative building.

“I’ve made some one-of-a-kind pendants and lapel pins. Each one’s made by hand, and each one’s got its own look to it.”

Many of the pieces include a rhombus in the shape of Saskatchewan from the old, tarnished copper, then a couple of pieces, almost like wheat sheaths with the new, shiny copper.

Interim Sask. NDP leader Trent Wotherspoon tweeted about his pin on Monday before the dome unveiling ceremony.

Hazel said she got the opportunity through a client, and was able to procure the materials through a partnership with Inland Metal in Regina which was doing the work on the dome.

Hazel explained that she’d been doing a lot of custom work lately, and this project went along those lines.

“The old and the new, and sort of conserving some history in a tangible piece of wearable art,” she explained.

The jewelry line was just announced on Monday, and by Monday night Hazel said she had already sold out.

“That’s Regina, that’s Saskatchewan for you – they definitely support local artists and celebrate the history.”

Now there’s a waiting list for the pieces, and Hazel said she’ll continue to make more as long as the materials last.
