Are the Saskatchewan Roughriders too nice or too darned naive?
After letting their coach, Chris Jones, walk away from his newly-signed contract to take a lesser job in the NFL, the Roughriders have reportedly been stymied twice in attempts to interview potential replacements.
Unlike the Roughriders, the Ottawa Redblacks and Winnipeg Blue Bombers are holding their employees to the terms of their contracts. Ottawa reportedly denied offensive co-ordinator Jamie Elizondo a chance to interview for Saskatchewan’s head coaching job. Winnipeg reportedly did the same with Paul LaPolice, a former Roughriders assistant.
Other teams realize it’s pretty late to start re-jiggering a coaching staff for the upcoming CFL season. When the Riders prematurely announced Jones’ contract extension they also revealed they had 10 assistant coaches signed to contracts. Days later, Jones was gone. It looks like — because of their naïveté while dealing with Jones — the Riders might get stuck with one of those assistants as their new head coach.
