It turns out some of Canada’s best-made whiskey is just a short drive away from Regina.
Last Mountain Distillery in Lumsden was named the 2019 Micro Distillery of the Year Award by the Canadian Whiskey Awards.
Its single cask whiskey was also awarded a gold medal.
“It’s quite a privilege to get awarded something like that, especially against some of the top-end whiskeys that are in this awesome country that we have,” said Braeden Raiwet, master distiller at Last Mountain Distillery.
He said Saskatchewan has some natural ingredients which help their products stand out from others in the nation.
“We have the privilege of having some of the best grain and we like to think that quality in gets quality out so thank you to those farmers that are growing those awesome grains for us.”
He said the distillery also does out of the ordinary things, such as a 100 per cent wheat whiskey or 100 per cent rye whiskey.
Last Mountain Distillery was founded back in 2010 by Colin and Meredith Schmidt. Raiwet said the community has embraced their accomplishments.
“I think there’s a lot of pride from start to finish.”
The Canadian Whiskey Awards are judged by an independent panel of whiskey experts who do a blind-tasting.
