A brand of baby sippee cups sold in Canada and the U.S. is being recalled after hundreds of complaints – and several cases of illnesses – have been reported.
The joint recall from Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and Mayborn USA Inc. involves five types of Tommee Tippee Sippee cups all with a removable, one-piece white valve.
According to the recall notice, it’s inside the valve where mould can develop from leftover moisture.
Ingesting mould might pose a risk of gastrointestinal symptoms and infections for those with compromised immune systems.
In Canada, Mayborn USA Inc. has received 484 reports of mould in the white valve of the cups, including four reports of potential illness.
Health Canada said it has received seven consumer reports related to this issue, including one of potential illness.
Around 227,000 affected products were sold in Canada, while around 3.1 million were sold in the United States through various retailers.
The plastic drinking cups have a spill-proof top with easy-grip sides and detachable handles.
The affected cups were sold in Canada and the U.S. from December 2014 through May 2016.
Some of the cups include short phrases on the front saying, “You Pour I’ll Fling,” or “Drink Drop Repeat.”
They hold around 200 to 300 millilitre (7 to 10 ounce) capacity and were sold for children ages 4 to 12 months.

People are advised to immediately stop using the recalled cups and contact Mayborn USA Inc. to receive a free replacement.
