The Saskatchewan Roughriders didn’t have to look far to find the team’s new defensive co-ordinator.
The club announced Friday that defensive backs coach Jason Shivers has been promoted to the role left vacant when Chris Jones left for a NFL job with the Cleveland Browns in January.
“I am happy to introduce Jason Shivers as our team’s defensive coordinator,” head coach Craig Dickenson said in a release. “I have had the opportunity to work alongside Jason for several years now. He is a very intelligent coach and communicator. He earns the players respect and they feed off his energy and work ethic.”
Shivers is entering his seventh season as a CFL coach, after starting his coaching career in Toronto in 2013.
In 2014 he joined the staff with the Edmonton Eskimos before moving to the Roughriders at the end of the 2015 season.
He’s spent the last three seasons as the club’s defensive backs coach.
“I want to thank Coach Dickenson for his support and for giving me this opportunity,” Shivers said. “I look forward to continuing to work with this coaching staff and the talented group of players. Saskatchewan is a great place to be a coach and I can’t wait to get back to work.”
In an interview with Jamie Nye on the Green Zone last month, Jones said Shivers was ready for a promotion.
“Quite honestly, he called the defences in the preseason some times last year and made some calls during the season last year. And so you got a guy who is ready to take the next step,” he said.
