Regina police and the coroner are investigating after a man was found dead in the backyard of a home in east Regina on Friday afternoon.
Police were called to a home on Bedford Crescent — near Dewdney Avenue East — around 2:50 p.m. for a report of a man with a gun. Police were told the man was behaving aggressively and threatening harm to himself and others.
When officers arrived at the home they heard what sounded like a gunshot. They headed toward the house and saw a man in the backyard with a gun. Police say officers heard another gunshot and saw the man collapse.
An ambulance was called, but the man died at the scene.
Police said the officer didn’t have any physical contact with the man, and didn’t fire their weapons.
The death is not connected to the incident that happened on Britannia Place earlier on Friday, according to police.
The coroner and the major crime section within the police service are investigating the death. Police said because this could be regarded as an “in custody death”, Saskatchewan Justice has been told what happened and will make the decision on whether an independent observer will oversee the investigation.
