Independent member of parliament, Erin Weir, is calling the testimony of Jody Wilson-Raybould on Wednesday “riveting’ and “unprecedented.”
“She’s certainly didn’t hold back in talking about the conversations she’d had behind the scenes with the prime minister and senior staff people in the government.”
Weir said people thought it would be interesting, but didn’t expect what happened.
What stood out to him during the testimony, was Wilson-Raybould saying that the political future of the Liberals in Quebec was part of the impetus for the alleged government interference.
“The notion that the government might have been making decisions based on explicitly electoral considerations was interesting,” said Weir.
Wilson-Raybould’s words definitely hurt the Liberals, according to Weir, who also thinks this will make the fall election more interesting.
“I think it remains to be seen whether that’s permanent damage or whether the Trudeau government can recover.”
Conservative leader Andrew Scheer has called for the prime minister to resign, but Weir said he thinks that’s a bit over the top right now.
Weir said he wants to focus on changing the machinery of government to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
