Who cares about Bryce Harper’s $330-million contract? Jason Witten coming out of retirement? John Tavares returning to Long Island? Or Johnny Manziel leaving the CFL?
Lulay trumps them all. If you ever meet a classier athlete than Lulay, let me know. Those other guys get more attention and more money, but nobody handled their professional trials and tribulations better than the quarterback who just retired after 10 seasons with the B.C. Lions. He leaves knowing other teams wanted him to play for them, despite his string of shoulder and knee injuries.
For the past three years, the Green Zone’s Jamie Nye and I would buttonhole Lulay at every Grey Cup. We would try to convince him to join the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who had a different starting quarterback each of those seasons and could have used the former Grey Cup champ and CFL outstanding player. Lulay would chuckle and tell us the reasons why he was going to stay in B.C. Sorry, Saskatchewan. We tried.
