Four teenagers are facing charges after police said they were arrested with weapons on them during the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association wrestling championships at Regina’s Campbell Collegiate on Friday night.
Terry Lazarou, spokesperson for the Regina Public School Division, told 980 CJME a teacher at Campbell saw a picture of the teens with what appeared to be weapons and immediately called police.
Officers arrived at the school Friday evening, identifying the teens in the photo before apprehending them. Police found a pellet gun and two hunting knives.
“When we were leaving, we saw about six or seven cops in an office with a couple of kids, then they drew the shades and you really couldn’t see anything after that,” described Melanie Lafontaine, who was at the school watching the SHSAA provincial tournament along with hundreds of other spectators. “Not many knew what was going on.”
Regina police said there wasn’t an altercation or disturbance in progress that led to police being called. Officers were able to respond in a relatively discreet manner or “quiet state” to make the arrests and prevent the situation from escalating. No one was hurt.
It’s unclear which school the four teens attend. They face weapons charges but cannot be named because of their age.
