Dancers from the Prairie Gael School of Irish Dance have places to go and people to see this weekend.
The school has 17 performances scheduled across Regina at various pubs.
Emily Armer, a co-owner of the school, compared the holiday to Christmas.
“You walk into the pub and it’s noisy and everybody’s excited — the thrill of Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day,” Armer said, after a performance for seniors at the Bentley on Saturday.
Armer said she starts planning for St. Patrick’s Day weekend in October, scheduling performances with the bars.
She said there will be more visits to seniors’ homes this month and into April, something she has to start arranging as early as December.
The school has about 80 students, including Jenah Healy, who signed up to stay connected to her roots. Healy came to Canada from Ireland when she was four.
“I love the music and just getting to see my friends every week and performing for people because they love it,” Healy said.
Julie Apperley, who is also Irish, said she first got interested in dancing after seeing it at Mosaic.
“It’s a lot of legs and core work. It can be so graceful while putting so much effort into it,” Apperley said.
“(I) just fell in love with the way the dancers could move their legs without moving their arms and get such nice rhythms and moves.”
