A house in Regina was badly damaged by a fire this morning.
Crews were called to the 700 block of Retallack Street at about 5 a.m.
“When they got there, the home was fully engulfed with flames. Luckily, the occupants had safely evacuated already,” said fire Chief Layne Jackson.
Jackson said there were four people in the house at the time — two adults and two children.
Damage to the house appeared extensive. The exterior was charred black and some of the siding on a neighbouring home was also damaged. The smell of smoke was still in the air.
People living in the two neighbouring homes had to be evacuated as well.
“Given the seriousness of the fire that was occurring in the one residence. The firefighters kept it from spreading to those two houses so they did some really good work there,” Jackson said.
At this point, the cause of the blaze is not yet known and is still being investigated.
The fire Chief said when it comes to fires that start during sleeping hours, having working smoke alarms is critical.
“They’re the ones that give you early alert and allow you to escape safely before the fire develops,” he said.
