Large swaths of Saskatoon lost power Monday thanks to a fallen tree branch.
According to Saskatoon Light & Power (SL&P) director Trevor Bell, the poplar branch hit a main high-voltage transmission line near Taylor Street and Preston Avenue at 2:33 p.m. This triggered a cascading outage, which cut power to 18 of 23 substations.
Most of the city’s east side, north end, and downtown went dark. On twitter, residents reported traffic lights shutting off on major streets like 8th Street E, Circle Drive, and Idylwyld Drive.
The outage also took down the City of Saskatoon and Saskatoon Transit websites.
Service was largely restored within an hour.
The city said they will investigate why an off-site back-up system for City Hall failed to support their website.
