According to a major union in Saskatchewan, the latest provincial budget does nothing to address what they call dangerous staffing shortages in the healthcare system.
Barbara Cape, president of SEIU (Service Employees International Union) West, said frontline workers in long-term care homes are stretched thin and taking on much more than their regular duties.
“I’m hearing about overtime to the tune of 16, 20, 24 hours in a row. I’m hearing about people not being able to get a bath because they’re so short staffed,” Cape said.
Cape said while there was money for buildings, there wasn’t the same amount of investment in frontline staff.
“It’s unfortunate that people don’t recognize the incredible value that they bring to the healthcare system,” she said.
She’s urging that the government and health authority meet with frontline workers to determine what’s an acceptable level of staff.
“I think they will be able to come up with a sustainable plan to recruit, retain and actually staff those facilities to the level that they should be.”
