The name-calling has gone too far, but Chelsea Carey’s curling team should be criticized for its performance at the women’s world curling championship.
They signed up for this. If they don’t want to curl at a high level, if they don’t want to represent Canada and subject themselves to scrutiny, there’s likely a recreation league available for them in Calgary. Carey’s rink won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts to qualify for the 13-team world championship in Denmark, then played badly, finished with a 6-6 record and missed one of the six playoff berths. That’s the bottom half of the standings!
It’s fair to wonder if Carey’s rink lacked the chemistry to perform better, if the players were physically ready for the competition, if the skip who had totally rebuilt her team knew what she was doing. And why couldn’t they make any important shots? Feel free to speculate, but keep it respectable.
Pro athletes are subjected to criticism. Fans pay money to watch their games. At this level, curlers are pro athletes. They’re expected to perform well, especially Canadian curlers, who should be challenging for a world championship every year. If they don’t win, it’s a failure. Carey’s rink failed. Deal with it.
