A week after cuts, funding for Regina school restored

With a single word in the legislature, cuts that some called “devastating” have been reversed for the Cornwall Alternative School in Regina.

On Wednesday during Question Period, the education minister was asked by the NDP if he would commit to restoring funding to the school. And Gord Wyant stood up and said simply, “Yes.”

In last week’s budget, the government cut the funding for the Cornwall Alternative School, effectively shutting it down.

On Tuesday, Wyant said he would revisit the funding question, then met with staff and students from the school.

When asked about the reversal, the minister said that sometimes putting a human face to things can lead you in a different direction.

The funding has been restored for at least another year, fulfilling the rest of the funding agreement that had been in place. Wyant said the government will follow a process to make sure alternative schools, like Cornwall, are doing what they’re expected to do.
