Saskatoon transit service to increase along 8th Street this summer

Starting next week, transit riders will be able to catch a bus along 8th street every seven and half minutes during peak times.

It’s part of the City of Saskatoon’s plan to move towards a population growth of 500,000 people.

“I think this change is really great,” said bus rider Elaine Griffith. “It’s going to help me get around the city to do my business quicker.”

The change comes into effect July 3.

In order to accommodate the faster pace, transit had to adjust 22 routes – adding five and cutting six – moves that have left some riders flustered over rerouting and transfers.

“We apologize for making these changes right off the bat,” said Jim McDonald, director of Saskatoon Transit at the announcement in Civic Square Monday.

“In the long run, it will provide better service for customers.”

During off-peak times during the week, there will be a bus every 10 minutes, then every 30 minutes on evenings and weekends.

“We’ve been hearing concerns about the big change because people are a little nervous,” said Cameron McMillan with Bus Riders Saskatoon.

“But we’re pretty optimistic and we’re hoping it won’t be too much of an adjustment for the riders.”

McMillan said the group feels 8th street is a good starting point to increase service.

“This will help shopping along 8th street a lot,” he said. “It’s the right sort of change to get more people taking transit.”

This summer, the focus will stay on 8th street, with 22nd street ramped up next year followed by Idylwyld and Warman road in 2018.
