Hundreds of people turned out to celebrations at Diefenbaker Park, throughout the day Friday.
A citizenship ceremony was held earlier in the day, welcoming 77 news Canadians to the Saskatoon area.
“We’re a welcoming country,” said Saskatoon Conservative MP, Kevin Waugh. “We’re just open to everybody and you can see that with the multiculturalism here at the park.”
NDP Member of Parliament Sherri Benson said we respect the diversity in our country.
“We have a very diverse community in Saskatoon,” she said. “We have lots of differences, lots of things that have made us the same, but we are better together.”
Even some future Canadians were in attendance for the celebrations.
“I’m hopefully going to become a Canadian in a couple of years,” said George Wong from China, who just landed as an immigrant last week. “I love your air quality, your freedoms, and your people.”
A pair of military planes marked the occasion with a fly by at exactly 10:49… 55 seconds.
Music performances were held all day.
A lot of people feeling sentimental about Canada on it’s 149th birthday.
We have one of the best country’s in the world,” said one man at the park. “When you look at the political situation in the United States and around the world, we definitely have one of the best.”
The kids a little less sentimental.
“I love Canada because their is a lot of cotton candy,” said Zeve Kaufman.
Her sister, a little more sentimental
“Canada has a lot of people who love to share and be kind to other people,” said Georgia Kaufman.
Don’t forgot about the fireworks Friday night at 10:40 p.m. they go till around 11:00 p.m.
The Optimist Club has put on the event since 1967.
