A woman who went to watch the Canada Day fireworks in Fort Qu’Appelle was allegedly sexually assaulted on Friday night.
Police say the 34-year-old woman was visiting the Fort Campground to take in the fireworks when she was assaulted by a strange man outside the public bathroom.
An unknown woman came to the victim’s aid, helping her to the bathroom before she called police.
Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP got the report late on Friday night, but didn’t release the information publicly until Monday morning.
“We had a very busy weekend this weekend and the investigation began July 1 and continued over the weekend,” said Cpl. Drew Wagner with Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP, when asked why it took this long.
He admitted that under normal circumstances it would be best to tell the public about a sexual assault sooner rather than later. But he noted that this investigation is progressing slowly as officers wait to get more information from the victim.
Cpl. Wagner said police sent out the notice on Monday in order to get the other woman who helped the victim to come forward to make a statement. It worked and the woman did come forward on Monday.
There is no description of the suspect available at this time.
