The Regina airport will have to say “goodbye,” at least temporarily, to a couple of daily flights thanks to the ongoing troubles with Boeing’s 737 Max airplanes.
Airport CEO James Bogusz was on the 980 CJME Greg Morgan Morning Show on Wednesday to report that WestJet is to cancel its daily flight to Vancouver for June and part of July.
He added that Air Canada plans to cut its red-eye, 1:40 a.m. flight from Regina to Toronto for the last two weeks of June.
“Between June 3 and July 4, (WestJet) is going to be suspending their non-stop flight to Vancouver once a day, which is a result of (the 737 Max 8),” Bogusz said.
Air Canada’s Regina-to-Toronto flight will be suspended from June 17 to June 30, he said.
In mid-March, Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced the Boeing airplane was being banned from flying in Canadian air space.
He issued the order over safety concerns after the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that killed everyone on board, including 18 Canadians, according to the Canadian Press.
WestJet and Air Canada are two of several airlines that have temporarily suspended their use of the plane.
“Because of course these airlines have so many aircrafts grounded now, it causes a cascade effect downstream,” Bogusz said.
The airport CEO said that, for now, the flight cancellations at YQR are temporary.
